Melfort Canada Day celebrations to be ‘one of the biggest celebrations’

Jun 8, 2021 | 9:00 AM

Plans are in place for Canada Day in Melfort for this year.

Director of Development, Planning, and Community Relations Brent Lutz said they wanted to make it bigger and better than last year’s celebrations that included fireworks at the Stonegate Shopping Centre.

This year’s events will begin at Memorial Gardens as the Legion does the flag raising ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by the Art in the City event which takes place throughout the city. It will involve local artists featuring their works with lawn displays and demonstrations. That takes place for noon to 6 p.m.

Between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. the Melfort Kinettes will host a Drive-in Bingo at the Melfort Fair Grounds.

There will also be fireworks again this year at Stonegate Shopping Centre, but with more flair than 2020.

“We have arranged to bring in the SCMA Award nominees, the Tucker Lane Band who will be performing live before the fireworks,” Lutz told northeastNOW. “And it will be a drive-in event.”

Lutz added that the event won’t cost residents a dime.

“Free to attend, and it’s going to be a great show,” he said. “Probably one of the biggest celebrations we’ve had for Canada Day here in Melfort.”
