Rock snake at Melfort hospital includes work of elementary students and community members

Jun 9, 2021 | 12:30 PM

A rock snake to pay tribute to healthcare workers at the Melfort Union Hospital is now over 80 rocks in length.

Maggie Puttick started the snake with help from students at Reynolds School where she is an educational associate.

“There was a rock group in Cold Lake, Alta. that did this last year and so I thought that would be a really cool thing to do to show our appreciation,” Puttick said.

The project was started in May with rocks painted by the grade one class.

“Since then, a few people from the community had added their rocks and, then on Monday, I added rocks from the grade 5 and 6 class and the pre-k’s,” Puttick said. “Our rock snake is now at about 80 rocks.”

Puttick is now hoping to get more members of the community on board by hosting a rock painting night at the Kerry Vickar Centre. The session will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is open to everyone, free of charge.

“It is not just for kids, any artistic ability is great,” Puttick said. “It’s just about showing your appreciation to the healthcare workers in Melfort.”

The snake is located between the walking and driving ramp at the hospital where a rock garden has replaced grass.

“Right now, the 80 rocks are taking up maybe a third of the length of the area so we would like to see it filled up and maybe even have a partner snake beside it,” Puttick said.

Another rock snake has been created in Swift Current and Puttick hopes to see them grow together.

“I have heard from a few of the healthcare workers that are always interested to see what rocks are new there when they start their shifts,” Puttick said.
