“[The city of Melfort] was unable to obtain access to that program, so we developed our own registry and then worked with the local RCMP to ensure the process would support their investigative needs.” 

Steffen said privately owned security camera footage can be a valuable investigative tool, and the registry helps make it easier to identify cameras that may have footage important to the RCMP. 

“Residents and businesses can complete the city’s security camera registry application found on the city’s website,” explained Steffen. People can provide their contact information and basic details about the location of the cameras around your home or business. 

It’s important to note that the registry information is not intended to be publicly posted and will be maintained by the city and only shared with the RCMP for investigative purposes. Steffen said there have been similar registries set up in municipalities across Canada. 

“Registering a camera does not give the city or RCMP access to the camera system or ongoing video,” Steffen said. “If footage is needed, the owner will be contacted and can decide whether to provide it.”
