Successful summer fun fest in Melfort, four weeks remain in playground program

The City of Melfort had a better turn-out than expected for their summer fun fest on Wednesday.

In the past, the event was called the mid-summer splash bash and was held at the Burke playground according to recreation programmer Shannon Marshall.

This year, the name changed to summer fun fest at the Spruce Haven recreation area.

“Spruce Haven splash pad is one that we don’t have summer staff because it is a self-led recreation space,” Marshall said. “We were able to utilize the activity with the spray pad and playground plus the activities that we brought.”

The summer staff had oversized sports equipment from the larger-than-life sports day, glitter tattoos and a bouncy castle on hand at the event.

“We had a ton of kids, families and even grandparents out there having a good time with some fun recreation equipment, it was great,” Marshall said.

There are four weeks remaining in the Melfort summer playground program. Next week is Olympics week.

A year-end party is in the plans after the four weeks of the program. Those details will be released later on their Facebook page.

Equipment rentals are still available at the Kerry Vickar Centre including some of the oversized sports equipment, backyard games and disc golf sets.

The City of Melfort is also bringing back the Amazing Race Melfort for the second year.

Registration is now open until August 13 with the event happening on August 21.

“The Amazing Race is good for families, brother and sister teams, or maybe a team of four from work. It is fun for everyone,” Marshall said. “Teams of four and the one stipulation is you do need one driver.”
