Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Russ Mirasty announced the recipients of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal Wednesday, and one of the winners will come as no surprise to residents of Melfort given all she does in the community.

One of the twelve recipients of the medal was Melfort’s own Peggy George. George has been described as a professional volunteer who is always helping out in the community in some way.

“The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal acknowledges the exceptional contributions made by these generous and capable individuals,” Lieutenant Governor Mirasty said. “I offer my congratulations and thanks to each recipient on this well-deserved honour.”

George serves as chair of the North Central Healthcare Foundation. In that role, she helped raise over $500,000 for medical imaging upgrades at the Melfort Hospital. Although the hospital gift shop had been closed due to the pandemic, she found a way to safely open it as well.

In addition, George was described as a driving force behind bringing the Communities in Bloom program to Melfort. She serves on the board of the Melfort United Church and is a long-time volunteer with the Melfort Mustangs Boosters Club.

This past spring and summer, George has spent much of her time beautifying the city and tending to plants, including watering them alongside her husband. Communities in Bloom in Melfort have earned national recognition.

George’s help with fundraising efforts has been instrumental in the past in bringing things like a heliport, an incubator, and blanket warmers to the hospital.

The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal was established in 1995 to recognize the extraordinary work done by volunteers across the province. Since its creation, the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal has been awarded to 228 deserving individuals.
