First annual Sask. Rampage slo-pitch tournament coming to Melfort

Sep 9, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Next weekend will mark quite the exciting time for the slo-pitch community here in the northeast as the first annual Sask. Rampage slo-pitch tournament will be held at Spruce Haven and Exhibition Grounds diamonds.

There are 20 teams entered in the tournament, with the top two teams, qualifying for the Slo-Pitch Nationals. Next Saturday and Sunday in Melfort will mark the last qualifier of the year.

There are teams from Alberta, Manitoba and of course Saskatchewan, along with a team that has already qualified for Nationals.

There will also be a $5,000 purse handed out, that will be distributed between the first, second and third place teams.

Head organizer of the tournament, Clayton Westgard, said when he originally had the idea for this tournament, he never dreamed that it would become this big, this fast.

“Basically I just wanted to give teams from around here, the opportunity to play slo-pitch and then it boomed really fast,” he said. “It’s the last qualifier of the year, so that definitely helped bring teams in.”

Westgard also mentioned what he hopes this event brings to the City of Melfort and the tourism industry, especially considering what the world has looked like the past year and a half.

“We’re trying to bring slo-pitch back to the northeast, up in the Melfort area and we’re trying to make it a big thing again,” he said.

“The main thing is to bring people from out of town. I’m hoping this can give a kickstart to getting more people to come through the city again.”

Westgard also spoke about how the event could be a benefit for the community for future years to come.

“Next year I’m hoping to start a sanctioned league here in Melfort, which will bring more teams from out of town into league play,” Westgard said.

Westgard knows, however, that he couldn’t have brought this large-scale event to Melfort without the help of his team.

“It’s a lot of work, but I got a good team behind me.”
