Dream come true: Mustangs Binner talks University commit

Aug 21, 2026 | 4:53 PM

Melfort Mustangs forward Kaleb Binner announced his commitment to the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings last week.

Binner has since spoken with northeastNOW and has said it’s a dream come true to continue his hockey career at the post-secondary level.

“I honestly didn’t know if this was gonna be a reality for me. As a kid, I always dreamt of playing university hockey, so to now be signing the documents and announcing my commitment, it’s honestly surreal,” he explained.

“My first year in Melfort, I was always a bit unsure if I was gonna be able to stay, but I was given an opportunity, and I just made the best of it, and now here I am. Looking back on the years before that, and even just as a young kid, it’s crazy to know that the dream I once had is now coming true. It’s really exciting.”

Binner is set to join a Vikings organization which has seen a lot of recent SJHL commits. It’s also one that just this past year began competing against the SJHL’s best once again at the Viking Cup.

“Watching a couple of teammates last year go out and play in that tournament with Zayden Sadlemyer and Bo Eisner, it looked like a lot of fun. I’ve also heard lots of great things about the group and the program they run there at Augustana, so I’m just super excited for the opportunity they gave me. It should be a lot of fun, and I hope to see a couple of teammates over Christmas, just on the other side. It’ll be a little different, but it should be fun,” the Calgary native added.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to commit to a great school like Augustana; they were the favourite right off the bat for me because they showed a lot of interest. I also see them improving as a team over the next couple of years, and I thought that I could help with that process, so that’s ultimately why I chose them.”

A 2005-born product, Binner is set to pursue a degree in Education, hoping one day to become a teacher.

While that will maintain his academic focus, his athletic focus will be at the ACAC (Alberta College Athletic Conference) level, which also features a handful of former Mustangs.

“I know it’s a huge step up, combining hockey and school, but being a part of the Mustangs organization for the past three years, I’ve learned a lot not only as a hockey player but as a person too. I thank the coaching staff and everyone else who’s helped me along the way to prepare me for the next step. I’m excited for the change; it’ll be good, so I’m just gonna go in there and do my best with school and hockey,” Binner concluded.

“I’ve been texting with some of the other guys who are at different places in the league; we’re already setting the dates and looking forward to when we get to play each other. It’ll be a little different, but you know it’ll be fun to see those guys again. To go from seeing them every day and then not- it sucks not being with them, but it’ll be fun playing against them for sure.”
