Lake Lenore School chosen for Adopt a School program, set to receive donations for library upgrades

Lake Lenore School in Lake Lenore will be participating in the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation’s Adopt a School program this fall, which runs from September 13 to October 3.

This initiative connects Coles in Saskatoon’s Midtown Plaza with Lake Lenore School and the Coles neighbouring community to help provide support for valuable library resources.

Ralph Viczko, principal of Lake Lenore School, is excited that his school was chosen and mentioned that this program is absolutely vital to helping to get kids more involved in reading.

“If we want our children to read and have an interest in reading, we have to have materials that are of high interest to them, so that means constant renewal of materials and books and finding those titles that kids want to read.”

Viczko, also pointed to the fact of how strongly reading is involved in students’ educations and how supportive he knows his community has been in helping the school.

“It’s a vital part of their education,” said Viczko. “We’re very fortunate. We’re in a very supportive community that is very good about supporting our school in whatever our endeavours are.”

And as the pandemic continues to impact the way students access reading materials, the Adopt a School program is continuing in its endeavour to upgrade library collections with updated and diverse learning materials, further enhancing their education and literacy skills.

Viczko knows how important and timely this program is for his school, along with the financial struggles that the pandemic has brought on as well.

“This program is great. Loss increases and budget restraints around school and public money has been tough. This program is just a really nice bonus in trying to recover.”

This year, 153 Canadian high-needs elementary schools across the country have been “adopted” by an Indigo, Chapters and Coles store that will fundraise on their behalf.

Those who wish to support can do so by making a donation in-store or through the online Adopt a School fundraiser.

Whether supporting in-store or online, 100 per cent of the funds raised through kiosk donations or the online fundraising pages for each school will be donated to participating high-needs schools.

As these schools and their students continue to navigate through the complexities of education during the pandemic, support is more essential than ever, and the opportunity to enrich the lives of students through their school libraries has never been greater.

According to a press release from Indigo, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation strongly believes that providing access to the right book at the right time can significantly change a child’s life, propelling them toward success in education, and in life.
