Mustangs buck Bombers in Home Opener in front of 1,100-plus
The Melfort Mustangs got their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season started off on the right foot.
In front of a packed house of more than 1,100 fans at the Nothern Lights Palace, it was the Mustangs that took down the visiting Flin Flon Bombers 5-2.
It was Curtis Hammond who opened the Mustangs season with a bang as he notched his first goal in the blue and green just two minutes into the first period. Fellow 20-year-old Seth McCulloch would make it 2-0 before the four-minute mark and things continued up from there.
The Bombers did get one back in the first but it was as close as they would get as Dawson Leroux made it 3-1 later in the first. The Lethbridge product said finally getting back to playing hockey was a fantastic feeling, especially with the atmosphere at the Palace on Friday night.
