Power outage in the northeast leaves 1,400 customers in the dark for nearly six hours

Residents of Melfort, Star City, Silver Park, Pleasantdale, Lac Vert and Naicam areas were left without power for almost six hours on Monday.

SaskPower sent out a tweet at 4:24 p.m. yesterday notifying the public that power was out in a large portion of the northeast. At 6:59 p.m. the affected communities were informed power was likely to return at midnight. The power in all affected areas was restored by 10:08 p.m.

The power outage happened after a truck moving a house struck power lines outside of Melfort resulting in 1,400 SaskPower costumers losing their power.

Spokesperson for SaskPower, Scott MacGregor, said there was one vehicle that touched the downed power line.

“When the line came down it came intro contact with a vehicle and the driver remained in their vehicle which is the exact right thing to do. They called it in, we sent a crew out to make the area safe,” MacGregor said.

SaskPower arrived on the scene to secure the area for the driver. There were no injuries.

The SaskPower website advises to always assume that a power line is live – even if it’s not sparking or making a sound, call SaskPower’s 24-hour Outage Centre at 310-2220 or 911 immediately and wait inside the vehicle until emergency personnel advise you that it’s safe to get out.
