Melfort Culture Days events cancelled due to rising COVID-19 cases

Melfort’s Culture Days events will not go ahead as planned.

There were several events planned over the course of a month including a Nigerian culture event scheduled for this Sunday, and a Filipino and Indigenous culture event set for later this month.

Director of development, planning, and community relations with the City of Melfort Brent Lutz told northeastNOW the events have been cancelled for this year.

“There was supposed to special demonstrations and opportunities to sample their arts, culture and some of their ethnic foods,” Lutz said.

The increasing cases of COVID-19 in the area and the province is to blame for the cancellations.

“We are disappointed; however, we want everyone to remain safe and the organizers of these events have decided that now would not be the time to gather together,” Lutz said.

Lutz said he hopes that an opportunity in the future will allow the city to celebrate those different cultures in the community.

Culture Days is a national celebration of arts and culture that takes place each fall. Last year’s celebrations were not able to go ahead as well due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Culture Days 2021 runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 24.
