Mustangs excited for first showcase since 2019

Oct 5, 2021 | 9:44 AM

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Showcase is underway at the Legends Centre in Warman and the Melfort Mustangs will kick off their showcase this morning.

Melfort will take on the Melville Millionaires at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, followed by the Notre Dame Hounds at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Scouts from USports, NCAA and more will be in attendance looking for the next great players for their programs. Mustang goalie Joel Favreau said that while it’s a chance to showcase their skills, there’s still four points on the line.

“Some people think a bit more on the individual stuff,” he said. “But this year, got to come in, play as a team, hopefully get a couple of wins.”

Melfort is 3-1-0-1 to start this season, good for seven points, and third in the SJHL standings as they head into the showcase. The Hounds and the Millionaires are an out of division pair of opponents for the Mustangs, and two teams they’ll only play four times each this season. Favreau said it’s just another test for the group.

“We haven’t really seen much of them, don’t really know what to expect,” Favreau said. “We’re going in, just play our game, trust our systems, trust what [Head Coach Trevor Blevins] is telling us, and we should get the right result.”
