Vandals cut down memorial tree at Wynyard Golf Course

A memorial tree on the Wynyard Golf Course was recently a target for vandals.

The tree that was placed on the course over 13 years ago in honour of an avid golfer was cut down on either Oct. 15 or 16.

Superintendent Dale Johnston said seeing the tree down was a shock for himself and the community.

“All of the comments are disappointed, angry and can’t believe it,” Johnston said.

According to Johnston, something will be done to replace the Colorado Spruce that was purchased by the family of Ray Skjervan who was a longtime member of the golf club.

“We have had some people say I have a tree in my yard that you can take, and I have one here that you can take or I’ll pay to replace it,” Johnston said. “Everybody in the community is behind replacing it and behind the frustration.”

The support and frustration is evident in the comments being made on the Facebook post that was made on Oct. 16 on the Wynyard Golf Club Facebook page.

The tree was in the middle of the number nine fairway.

“It was prominent in the middle of the fairway and made for a decent hole and a little bit of a challenge,” Johnston said.
