Broncos Beat Mustangs

Mustangs fall to Broncos in first half of home and home

Oct 23, 2021 | 9:23 AM

The Melfort Mustangs scored first on Friday, Oct. 22, but didn’t score last against the Humboldt Broncos at the Northern Lights Palace.

Kevin Minnoch opened the scoring on the powerplay in the first period for Mustangs, who held a 1-0 lead after one. However, forward Curtis Hammond said they might have gotten a bit confident heading into period two.

The Broncos score less than a minute in to tie it up, but Hammond would restore the Mustangs lead not long after. Although a Matthew Perkins goal tied things up for the Broncos before the 10-minute mark of the frame.

Lucas Ceccarelli scored later in the third and Hammond said after that, it was tough for them to recover.

“We just have to turn pucks up quick and get going up north so we can get offensive pressure in their zone,” Hammond said.

The Mustangs pressured hard in the third, but could not find the equalizer, falling 3-2.

Melfort fired 31 shots at Bronco goalie Rayce Ramsay in the contest and Hammond said they need to make life more difficult for Humboldt’s backstop.

“We’ve been focusing on trying to get more screens in front of that goalie,” he said. “Because he does see the puck well and if we can get in front, we should be able to get some more on him.”

The Mustangs and Broncos do battle once again on Saturday night in Humboldt. Mat Barrett has the play-by-play at 7:15 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
