The Nipawin Hawks returned to the win column with a 4-2 victory over the Weyburn Red Wings Tuesday at the Centennial Arena.

Coming off back-to-back losses this past weekend the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) was looking to start a busy week of three games with a win. The team got off to a good start when newcomer Mason Svarich opened the scoring on his first shift in a Hawks uniform after being signed from the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League this week.

Weyburn would will their way back tying the game in the first period and sending the teams to the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Nipawin came out strong in the middle period and opened a 3-1 lead. Dawson Brace and Braxton Buchberger each notched their third goals of the season. Evan Bortis made the game 4-1 in the third period capping the Hawks scoring, Weyburn did add a later powerplay goal but couldn’t get closer than the two-goal deficit. Bortis said the team felt they needed those two points.

“For sure we needed this one,” he said after the game. “We’ve been struggling a bit in the offensive and defensive zones. I think we really cleaned that up today, it was a good team win.”

The third-year Hawk defenceman has four goals on the year.

Netminder Harmon Laser-Hume picked up the win in the Nipawin net in his second start with the team, the 18-year-old made 19 saves in the victory.

The Hawks fired 28 shots on Mitchell Dazza in the Weyburn goal.

Nipawin finished without scoring on three powerplays, and Weyburn went one for five.

The Hawks will now prepare for a hometown showdown with the Battlefords North Stars on Friday before a trip to Humboldt on Saturday. Bortis said getting the week started with a win was important to the team.

“It’s good to start off with a win, the guys get going during the week, practice gets better, there’s some intensity going into the weekend,” he said.

With the victory the Hawks get back to .500 evening their record at 9-9-2 through the first 20 games of the SJHL season. They hold down the eighth and final playoff position as the halfway point of the season nears.

Both Friday and Saturday’s games are 7:30 p.m. starts.
