WATER CONCERNS

Village of Plunkett continuing fundraising efforts for water system upgrades

Nov 18, 2021 | 5:00 PM

The Village of Plunkett is still hoping to install a community wide reverse osmosis system, but fundraising for the equipment hasn’t been easy over the course of the pandemic.

A boil water advisory has been ongoing for several years for the village of around 40 households and 60 residents.

Fundraising committee member Della Dukart said the committee has been trying to think outside of the box to raise money.

Things such as Drake Meats and Mom’s Pantry orders have been all that can go forward with public health restrictions over the past 18 months according to Dukart.

“It is about all you can do; you can’t do anything huge because you can’t do much for get togethers until COVID gets better,” Dukart said. “We are going to keep looking into whatever else we can do.”

Back in March of 2020, before the onset of the pandemic, a St. Patty’s day stew supper and progressive 50/50 raffle brought in around $1,500.

A takeout meal is one option that is a possibility sometime in the new year.

“It is something different because things like fall suppers aren’t really doable right now either,” Dukart said.

At this rate, there is no timeline as to when they have might have funds secured to make the upgrades to the water system.

Dukart has been a resident of the community for about seven years and the water hasn’t been great in her time there.

“We have had a boil water advisory since I have been here. There has been a bit done to it but there is still a need for a better system to be put in place,” Dukart said.

There are some days when the water is very discoloured and very unpleasant looking, she said.

The reverse osmosis system seems to be the best solution for the village but comes with a price tag of at least over $120,000.

Dukart wanted to help with raising funds as a community so the effects aren’t felt so hard by each individual household.

Village council has made several applications for government funding for water treatment equipment since 2014, all of which have been denied.

Plunkett is located southwest of Humboldt on highway 16.
