Mustangs find selves in fourth straight shootout game, fall in third straight

The Melfort Mustangs were in yet another shootout on Saturday night making it their fourth in a row.

The Mustangs fell to the Estevan Bruins 5-4 in the contest, giving the Mustangs their third straight shootout loss.

“Two teams were battling hard, forcing each other to make mistakes,” said Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins. “But at the end of the day, we found a way to get a point when we were down 4-3.”

The back and forth contest saw the Bruins open the scoring just over a minute into the hockey game as Mikol Sartor’s 10th of the season got things started for Estevan.

Melfort would respond, courtesy of Nolan Doell’s second as a Mustang, and then Dawson Leroux’s fifth of the year to give Melfort a 2-1 lead heading into the second.

Estevan would take the lead back as Erik Houk and Olivier Poulior scored 35 seconds apart midway through the frame to make it 3-2 Bruins. Doell would score again with just over five minutes to play in the second and it was all tied 3-3 heading into the third period.

Nobody cracked the tie until Pouliot scored his second of the night just passed the halfway mark of the period. It would stay like that until three minutes remained when Marco Lopez’s ninth goal of the season made it a 4-4 hockey game, forcing overtime.

While the offence was alive and well for Melfort, Blevins said there’s some work to be done on the goals against.

“That’s hockey,” he said. “And just know that we competed hard against a top placed team in their rink and we can take a lot of positives out of that.”

Melfort drops to 13-7-1-4 on the season and will face these very same Bruins on Wednesday at the Northern Lights Palace.
