First Christmas Lights Tour at Melfort Campground opens next weekend

Dec 3, 2021 | 6:00 PM

Christmas time in Melfort is getting more exciting as a new lights tour is set to open next weekend.

The Christmas lights tour at the Melfort campground is being made possible by the City of Melfort, sponsoring businesses, and volunteers.

Coordinator Juanita Kember said the idea came up a few years ago but it was finally able to go ahead this year.

“It will be a humble beginning but I hope people will see the potential of it for years to come,” Kember said.

With the COVID-19 pandemic slowing down business, Kember said this was a good time to make the idea come to life.

“We just thought it would be a really good thing to have in Melfort and have available for the Christmas season,” Kember said.

T.W. Enterprises did the laser cut outs of the displays, while George Home Hardware got on board to help with getting the lights, extension cords, flood lights and more to get things going.

“Different businesses sponsored the cost of the displays to put them up,” Kember said.

December 10 is opening night and it will run for the three weekends leading up to Christmas, as well as Dec. 23 and 26.

All the proceeds at the gate will go to local service groups that will be helping out.

“We are asking for a $10 minimum entry fee but above and beyond is encouraged because it goes to the service groups,” Kember said. “We want to make sure they are bringing in something for their volunteer work.”

Northeast Pregnancy Options will be volunteering at the gate for opening weekend. Meskanaw 4-H will be on hand for Dec. 16 to 19, while Communities in Bloom will take Dec. 23 and 26.

The hope is that the event will be of benefit to the entire community.

“It is a fun festive thing to do as supporting service groups in the community and also advertisement for different businesses,” Kember said.

There are around 20 area businesses that came on as sponsors for the brand new lights tour in the city.
