Northeast Genealogy Group looking to add members as they continue work on cemetery project

Dec 9, 2021 | 4:00 PM

The Saskatchewan Genealogy Society’s Northeast Group is continuing to their work on a cemetery and obituary recordings project.

Currently, the group that meets once a month at the Kerry Vickar Centre consists of six members, but they are hoping to add to their membership.

Vice president Shelly Le Franc told northeastNOW having updated cemetery listings is a major function in genealogical searches.

“When anyone wants to do research, they can have hopefully the name and have an area where they think they have passed away from or at,” Le Franc said. “We would be able to start searching in the cemeteries in our region.

The project has been underway for many years according to Le Franc.

“At point one of our members said it was 72 cemeteries in the region,” Le Franc said. ‘That isn’t all of them, but we are going to update them as best as we can.”

Potential members don’t need to be from the northeast area because as residents from the region have a lot to contribute, so do those who aren’t originally from here. Newcomers have tidbits of information to bring to the table as well so there is no such thing as boundaries.

“We are looking into our ancestry and that is not just in one location, our ancestors are all over,” Le Franc said.

Meetings are typically the first Tuesday of each month from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. but some evenings will be added to expand availability.

The Northeast Genealogy Group was created in the 1980’s and over the years has dwindled but the current members are trying to revive it.

“We welcome new ideas and new members, we are open,” she said.
