Melfort Daycare Co-operative hosts winter wonderland fundraiser

The Melfort Daycare Co-operative’s annual sled dog fundraiser filled the community with holiday magic this past weekend.

Sled dogs eager to show off their skills greeted residents of the town at the Melfort exhibition grounds on Dec 12.

Daphne O’Neil, executive director at the Melfort Daycare Co-operative, said the sled dogs have become the highlight of the year-end event.

“This is our Christmas fundraiser. We do it annually but last year we were not able to do it so this is our first year back in person.”

Campbell’s Racing Sled Dogs were a huge hit selling out all 120 tickets within the first two hours of the event.

For those feeling chilly in the winter wind, the daycare had plenty of indoor activities for people of all ages to enjoy, including a silent auction.

“All donations are from sponsors. We have a great community that supports us,” O’Neil added. “We added in a few new things, Sasktel sponsored our craft area.”

Those warming up could also enjoy a pancake lunch and meet Santa Claus.

O’Neil said she is delighted to see the event become so successful after all in-person fundraising activities were halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Before today, it’s all been the families doing it or online. It’s lovely to see the people and talk with them rather than ‘here is a form’.”

The daycare is hoping to host a family dance in February provided there are no additional public health orders.

Due to the pandemic, the daycare initially saw a drop in enrollment but, with restrictions lifting, the daycare is back at maximum capacity.

O’Neil said they are following all current public health orders to ensure the safety of all families who utilize their services.

“Just wearing our masks, we are hand sanitizing and being very cautious.”
