The Melfort Mustangs went 3-0 in their past week of SJHL play, being led by some of the hottest players in the league.

James Venne, the 17-year-old netminder, who’s started 14 games in a row for the Mustangs, went 3-0 with a .67 goals-against average, a .971 save percentage and a shutout last week earning himself the SaskTel Goalie of the Week.

Venne, who has led his team to seven straight victories — the longest current streak in the SJHL — is fourth among goalies in goals-against average at 2.17, with a 10-2-0-3 record, two shutouts and a save percentage of .911.

Melfort also had two runner-up’s with both 20-year-old Marco Lopez and 20-year-old Carter Anderson finishing second in RBC Forward of the Week and SGEU MVP of the Week, respectively.

Lopez is currently riding a five-game point streak, where he had a pair of hat tricks, totalling eight goals in just a four-game span. He had four goals and two assists in three games played this past week with a road victory against the Millionaires, as well as a home and home sweep against the Hawks.

Lopez also currently sits ninth in the entire league in goal scoring with 17 on the year, as well as third on the team in points with 27.

As for Anderson, he is riding a four-game point streak, having tallied a total of seven points in that time. In last week’s play, he also had four goals and two assists in the three games played.

Anderson is also currently tied for third on the team in assists with 14 and fifth on the team in points with 23.

The Mustangs, who are currently third place in the SJHL standings with 45 points and a 20-9-1-4 record, will return from their Christmas break on New Year’s Eve when they face the rival Nipawin Hawks in Melfort as they aim for their eighth straight victory.
