222’s Original Fast Pitch returning to Melfort for winter camps

The 222’s Original Fast Pitch is returning to Melfort once again for their winter training camps.

Beginning Jan. 4 at the Kerry Vickar Centre, there will be pitching, catching and hitting small group training sessions.

Owner and instructor Dean Holoein told northeastnow the goal remains the same; to get these kids ready for the upcoming season.

“It’s not new, just maybe how we’re packaging it,” he said. “We’ve had winter training in Melfort over the last three of four seasons and it just helps get their kids ready for evaluations, tryouts and summer clubs. Once January rolls around, it’s not too far before we’re clearing off the snow and getting on the diamond.”

Holoein has been serving the Melfort area for quite a long time.

“Obviously, we have a special connection with Melfort, just growing up here and being a part of minor softball back in the day,” he said. “We’re hoping we can get the shootout rolling again this summer. It’s all just part of their softball association and we work really closely with Melfort minor. We’ve got a lot of kids from here in our winter travel teams, so I think that’s good for us and it just bolsters their program as well, with the hard work they put in over the winter.”

As far as those winter travel teams are concerned, Holoien explained when they come to instruct, they’re also looking to fill some spots of their own.

“We’re always scouting talent, we’ve got a lot of different programs that we run,” he said. “Every day we’re looking for new opportunities and there are a lot of softball players that come up from all kinds of different areas across the province. We’re not sure where that next softball player is coming from but we’re always keeping an eye. When we see that talent and the want to get better and play elite fastball, that’s right up our alley. We love providing that opportunity for kids.”

The sessions will be an hour and a half in length and will cost $40 per session. They will have a maximum of 16 athletes with pitching and catching being split in half into two groups of eight.
