Nipawin is set to have a productive 2022

This year was a very productive year for Nipawin, and the year 2022 will be no different.

Having completed several major projects, including the water treatment plant and lift station, the city will now be able to focus on the heliport project and Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) projects.

Mayor Rennie Harper said the town is glad to have completed some large-scale ongoing projects.

“Water treatment plant which has been an ongoing thing for a few years now, which is now fully operational the town is fully on their filter system and its working well.”

The city had added new water wells and will be adding more to ensure the city has ample water to meet the needs of today and well into the future.

The town used its municipal economic enhancement program (MEEP) funding to help install a lift station.

The previous station had become a safety issue for staff and the community. That project is expected to be completed in February.

The town used the MEEP funding to help address the issues raised by residents on Guloien and Peters drive.

One of the focuses for 2021 was in the area of Parks and Recreation. When the COVID-19 public health orders limited gatherings indoors, the town was determined to allow residents to spend time with friends and family.

“We created what is know as Barbers Pond, an outside skating rings, rental of bikes, snowshoes, cross country skis, disk golf, to help people get together as families.”

A new marketing and tourism coordinator join the town to showcase what Nipawin had to offer.

“We developed a new website and started to market it. We have seen a 150% increase in tourism in the year and a half.”

The year was finished with a Christmas celebration. A tree lighting took place in the town square and nearly 400 people turned up for hot chocolate, hot dogs, and sleigh rides.

Harper said she is happy to see how the town has been able to offer support to the community throughout the year.

“The support that the town of Nipawin has been able to provide to the town as a whole for reconciliation and activities. We aren’t always the lead but we are able to support the community.”

In 2022 the town will be receiving ICIP funding for new dressing rooms in the arena and the decommissioning of the landfill.

“We will also be constructing a sidewalk on highway 35 that will lead in front of the A&W all the way to the pineland co-op to ensure that people aren’t walking on the highway.”

Harper would like to thank Nipawin and the surrounding area for their patience this year and wishes them a very happy holiday season.
