Humboldt Bronco Perkins commits to post-secondary

Rookie forward, Matthew Perkins, has been having an impressive season with the Humboldt Broncos.

Now he will officially continue his post-secondary hockey career with the University of Minnesota-Duluth on a full-ride NCAA Division I scholarship with the Bulldogs.

The 18-year-old Balgonie original is currently sixth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League top skater standings with 46 points, 19 goals and 27 assists in just 40 games so far this season.

Following November SJHL action, Perkins was awarded forward of the month. With nine goals and nine assists, this was the most points earned by any skater in the league.

The Broncos organization congratulated Perkins on his commitment in a recent press release.

“The hard work he has shown up to this date is a big reason for his success that he is very much deserving of. We look forward to continuing to develop his skills to get him ready for this next level in his career,” said head coach and general manager, Scott Barney.

For Perkins, he noted it is a dream come true.

“From a young age it’s been a dream of mine to get a scholarship and play college hockey,” Perkins said. “It means a lot to me and my family, and this has truly been a mind-blowing experience and opportunity.”

It’s not the only high-profile commitment for the Broncos this season.

The organization announced in early December that forward and Humboldt hometown player, Connor McGrath, committed to Ferris State University to play for the NCAA Division 1 Bulldogs once his junior career is complete.
