Mustangs hold off Hawks for weekend homestand sweep

It was a bit of an opposite game from Friday night, but the Melfort Mustangs have now won two games in a row.

On Saturday, Jan. 29, the Mustangs defeated the Nipawin Hawks 3-1, just one night after a wild 7-6 win in overtime against Notre Dame.

Joel Favreau stopped 30 of 31 and said everyone bought into the defensive plan.

“Clearing guys out of the front of the net,” Favreau said. “Making sure we pick up. Everyone was communicating out there and it made everyone’s job a lot easier.”

Leith Olafson scored for the Mustangs midway through the first period, but the Hawks would respond about five minutes into the second period.

That was as close as the Hawks would get though as Marco Lopez scored later in the second period for Melfort, while Zac Somers added the insurance marker in the third period.

The win puts Melfort back into a tie for third place with the Flin Flon Bombers and Favreau said they know how big this win over the Hawks was.

“Absolutely huge,” Favreau said. “These ones against division rivals, it’s always nice to take them.”

Melfort will be in Battlefords and Kindersley for their final western road swing of the season.
