Frustration Mounts

Mustangs give up another late goal in loss to Ice Wolves

Feb 13, 2022 | 10:30 AM

The Mustangs and La Ronge Ice Wolves battled in an exciting and firy affair at the Northern Lights Palace on Saturday, Feb. 13, but it was another late third period goal that sunk Melfort

In a game that didn’t see more than a two goal lead, the Mustangs couldn’t seem to get the go ahead goal.

After a Friday night 3-2 overtime loss where the Mustangs thought they deserved better, assistant coach Dan Meyers said it wasn’t as consistent an effort.

“Tonight, on and off for 60 minutes,” he said. “Then we get down into the last ten minutes of the third period, and I don’t know if we start gripping our sticks too tight or what’s going on, but it seems like everyone gets a little nervous the last ten minutes instead of going forward.”

It didn’t look great early on for Melfort as the Ice Wolves got out to an early 2-0 before six minutes had passed in the first period. However, Curtis Hammond got the Mustangs back in the game with a pair of power play goals in the period. La Ronge would score in between Hammond’s power play markers leaving things at 3-2 through one.

Thomas Moore tied things for Melfort later in the second period, but that didn’t last long as former Mustang Parker Fofonoff scored for La Ronge to restore the lead. That was answered though by Dawson Leroux, tying things 4-4 through two.

And in a game that saw eight goals through two periods, defence took over in the third as we didn’t see a goal until there was just over a minute and a half left on the clock when Ryley Morgan notched his second of the night.

Meyers said they have to continue working and come out in their next game hitting and confident.

“You’ve got to put the work in,” Meyers said. “I know for each player you’ve got to trust each player, trust your goalie, and if we start doing some of those things, I think things will turn around here.”

The loss was Melfort’s fourth in a row. They fall to 25-15-3-5 on the season to maintain fourth place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and are back in action on Friday, Feb. 18 when the Kindersley Klippers are in Melfort.
