Penalty box brawl goes viral, Beaver Blues advance

Feb 16, 2022 | 1:08 PM

Senior men’s hockey in Saskatchewan became a national trend on social media yesterday following videos of multiple brawls during playoff games over the weekend.

Battleford’s senior men’s hockey team completed a 3-0 sweep over the Maymont Settlers in the first round of the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League playoffs. However, the news that carried the weekend was the melee that occurred near the end of Game 3 on Sunday in Battleford.

The Blues were wrapping up a 6-2 victory over the Settlers, when according to a Twitter user, one of the Maymont players took exception to trash talk from the home team. This quickly escalated shoving, then an altercation took place in the penalty box, resulting in Blues players coming to their teammate’s rescue.

Maymont, in addition to having been outscored 26-8 in the previous two games, was also playing with only nine skaters on Sunday. Troy Watt topped all scorers for Battleford with two goals and an assist in the series-clinching win.

This isn’t the first time the club made the social media rounds on Twitter for fighting. A brawl between the Beaver Blues and the Turtleford Tigers was shared by several sports media accounts, including Sportsnet host and reporter Carly Agro who formerly covered regional sports out of Lloydminster.

With the opening round complete, Battleford now faces the second-ranked Tigers in the semifinals, who also won in a sweep over the weekend. Game 1 is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. start in Turtleford on Friday evening, with the Blues hosting Game 2 at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday before returning to Turtleford on Feb. 23.

Another playoff melee

The other brawl that trended on social media occurred between the Radisson Wheatkings and the Maidstone Jets. Radisson won the series 3-0 and will face top-ranked Meota in North Battleford on Friday.
