New family resource centre celebrates grand opening in Humboldt

Mar 3, 2022 | 12:52 PM

The Humboldt Early Years Family Resource Centre (HEY FRC) is now open following a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Thursday morning.

The centre will provide educational supports for families and children ages 0-5 in the Humboldt area and referrals to other services that are needed to help children develop.

Recent renovations to the build refitted the centre to include play areas for different age groups, quiet areas, and a family focused kitchen area so parents and caregivers have a space for themselves. Indoor and outdoor play areas are not complete yet but will also be part of the space.

Inner decor takes into consideration the First Nation influences on education and community and welcomes newcomers to the community.

Discussion around the needs for a centre have been on going at the Horizon School Division, said Kevin Garinger, director of Education at Horizon School Division, especially in the last two years with the added stress of COVID-19.

“We know that play is how children learn to master their environments and how they test things and satisfy their curiosity. This natural drive for play mirrors another equally important life skill, and that’s resiliency.”

With the discussion came leadership and partnership, said Garinger, as Partners Family Services and executive director, Hailey Kennedy, were brought on board to provide resources and support.

The centre was created and will be run by an advisory board and Garinger said the work that has gone into the centre already is a testament to the work and consideration that have been ongoing as the centre was developed.

“It takes a village to raise a child they say and it also takes a village to create the opportunities that are necessary for children and you’ve given great thought and consideration, all of you, for every every aspect of this center, every piece of equipment and every support that will be provided for the learning of our children and support of our families.”For more information on the services available and how to access them, visit the HEY FRC website.
