A local girl is representing the northeast in the big leagues.

Sarah Loehr, a 12-year-old from Muenster, Sask. is heading to Vero Beach, Florida to take part in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Trailblazer female ball event from April 13–17.

Loehr told northeastNOW that she is honoured to be chosen as one of the 96 female players selected to participate in the program.

“I’m very excited to be able to go there and learn more about baseball, especially with girls my age and from all around North America.”

The Trailblazer Series was founded in 2017 to offer a new opportunity to females interested in baseball. Young women are invited to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day by learning about the sport at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex.

Girls aged 11 to 13 from across North America are invited to apply for an all-expenses-paid trip for promising athletes. Those selected to participate are provided with developmental coaching, access to guest speakers, game time and educational opportunities.

Member of the USA Baseball Women’s National team and other sports professionals will speak to young prospects about what playing in the majors looks like.

Despite being a young athlete, Loehr has been playing the sport for roughly eight years.

“I’ve been playing baseball since about four. I switched to softball, which I’m also going to be playing this year.”

Although she loves playing in a co-ed group, she is looking forward to not only taking part in the trailblazer series but to playing on an all-female softball team this year in her hometown.

With the support of her father Brent, Loehr has had the opportunity to explore other sports such as cross-country, soccer, volleyball and curling further motivating her to become a successful athlete despite the ups and downs that come with competitive sports.

For young girls who have a passion for the sport and one day want to follow in Loehr’s footsteps, she reminds everyone to keep their heads up despite the challenges that they may face.

“If you really like it, then you should keep on playing.”
