Forcing Game 7

Mustangs force game seven after statement win in Yorkton in game six

Mar 28, 2022 | 9:39 AM

There will be a game seven between the Melfort Mustangs and the Yorkton Terriers in their SJHL Quarter final series.

This after a 5-3 win by the Mustangs in Yorkton on Sunday, March 27 in a do-or-die game six as Melfort has stormed back from a 3-1 series deficit.

The Mustangs led 3-0 after the first period after goals from Ben Tkachuk, Seth McCulloch, and Leith Olafson. Mustangs assistant coach Dan Meyers said they came out flying.

“We came out skating, we came out hitting, we were throwing pucks at the net and we were jumping on rebounds,” he said. “And over the last two games, that’s how we’ve been getting our goals.”

Marco Lopez added a goal in the second period before the Terriers finally managed to get a couple of markers later in the frame as J.D. Hall and Kishaun Gervais each scored to bring it back to 4-2.

However, Nolan Doell would score halfway through the third period to restore Melfort’s three-goal lead. For Doell, and the aforementioned Tkachuk, it was the first goals of the series for the Mustangs two leading point-getters in the regular season. Meyers said it was a nice breakthrough game for their leaders.

“Those guys, it was nice to see them get some points,” Meyers said. “They had a good game, everyone played a part.”

Kishaun Gervais would add another goal for Yorkton to make things interesting at 5-3, but the Mustangs would weather a late surge by the Terriers to force game seven back in Melfort on Tuesday, March 29.

Puck drop on Tuesday is 7:30 p.m. at the Palace.
