Highway 9 around Hudson Bay officially ranked third-worst road in Saskatchewan

May 3, 2022 | 11:54 AM

Highway 9 outside of Hudson Bay is being ranked the third-worst road in the province.

That’s according to a campaign by CAA which aimed to highlight the roads in the province that needed to be fixed as soon as possible. People across the province were able to nominate and vote for which one they believed was in the worse shape.

The poor driving conditions on Highway 9 aren’t a new problem for Hudson Bay residents. The road was also voted as the third-worst in the province in 2021 and the fifth-worst in 2018.

What makes the highway problematic?

“They’ve patched it so many times that there are big ruts in the road, mostly potholes,” said Bert Dyck, the owner of Robert Dyck Trucking who previously shared his thoughts with northeastNOW.

According to Floyd Hooge, co-owner of C & F Trucking Limited, the ruts and potholes appear over a 38 km section south of the town.

For him personally, it needs to be repaved and not just touched up.

“I’ve lived (in Hudson Bay) for 50 some years, I don’t know if that road has ever been fully paved over the original one.”

Highway 9, which goes as far south as the Saskatchewan-North Dakota border, has had work done over the years. However, most projects have happened around Yorkton as this is where the road experiences a big chunk of its traffic.

Meanwhile, Regina’s Mayfair Crescent topped this year’s list for the worst road.

The top 10 went as followed:

  1. Mayfair Crescent, Regina
  2. Saskatchewan 47, Springside
  3. Highway 9, Hudson Bay
  4. Saskatchewan 155, La Loche
  5. Saskatchewan 5, Buchanan
  6. Circle Drive, Saskatoon
  7. Fourth Avenue Viaduct SW, Moose Jaw
  8. Grant Drive, Regina
  9. Ingersoll Crescent, Regina
  10. Ninth Avenue SW, Moose Jaw
