Rick and Jennifer Robins leave behind everlasting legacy

Jun 6, 2022 | 5:13 PM

June 27 will mark a bittersweet moment, both for the community and Captain Rick and Jennifer Robins, as they are set to begin a new journey.

The couple, who have run the Salvation Army for the past seven years, as well as doing countless other things in and around our area, will be heading west to Fernie B.C.

While the pair said there was never intent to leave and would’ve been more than happy to retire in Melfort, they know there are other communities who need their help and this is what they signed up for.

“You serve for a time and then you receive a phone call saying you have been appointed to Fernie B.C.,” said Robins. “I mean, they talked to us about it, you know, a few months ago that we have you on a list for a move this year, are you okay with that? And, you know, are we okay with it? Yes, and no.”

“We love it here in Melfort. We’ve had a fantastic time here, but we also know, when God calls you into ministry, you go where he sends you. There’s a need in Fernie, where they believe our skills and abilities can help grow that place. We got seven years here in Melfort that we have thoroughly loved and enjoyed.”

And Melfort has thoroughly loved and enjoyed them, as great people who do even greater things. And although the love and praise may seem like a no-brainer to most, it hasn’t hindered how these two feel about our community.

“We are grateful for the wonderful outpouring of love of the people in the Melfort area for us and our family over these past years. Building relationships with the people in the community, creating more mission partners with the Salvation Army here in the community of people that are like-minded and see the work that we, as a Salvation Army, do and want to be a part of it, and to help out with that.”

While it will take some getting used to when the calendar reads July and the Robins are no longer here, they have assured us the Salvation Army will be in good hands and the work they’ve done and the legacy they’ve built will only grow stronger.

“We’re trying to prepare the way, as best as possible for Captain Glenna coming in here and taking over for us,” said Mr. Robins. “One of our things that we try to do is to finish well. Those partnerships with people that we were able to grow and just to carry on, hopefully, those partnerships will continue in the future, as well.”

The Robins’ first day in Fernie is set to begin on Canada Day.
