Four Tisdale high school students to play for Team Sask Football this summer

A total of four Tisdale football players will be suiting up this summer, however, it won’t be for their high school team, the Tisdale Tornados.

They will be playing at an elite level, representing their province as members of Team Sask.

First off, it will be Tilka Chapman, as she will be playing in the first-ever U18 Female National Championship in July in Regina. Chapman is also currently a member of the Regina Riot.

“Honestly, she is one of the most dominant female players in this province,” said Tisdale Tornados head coach Keenan Carrier. “She’s definitely earned the leadership role she plays and the work ethic that she has, there’s going to be no stopping her.”

And joining her in the title game will be her current Tornados teammate, Shayden Magnus.

“She just started football this year and she’s the type of person who never misses a workout,” said Carrier. “She has the most attendance out of anybody on our team. She is always attempting to get better and it really shows that she’s going to be a standout player on that youth female team.”

As for the boys, it will be Tyson Schwanke and Ambrose Abiara. However, unlike the girls, they won’t be on the same team.

Schwanke will be playing for U18 Team Sask, as they compete in the Football Canada Cup, in July in Kelowna, B.C.

“He’s a standout offensive lineman for us. He’s always working hard and he’s a big body, he can move some people around,” said Carrier. “So, you know, having that guy on our team has really opened up some holes and has allowed us to have a really good running game.”

For Abiara, he made the Team Sask U18 Futures team that will compete in Western Regionals this summer.

“Ambrose is a kid that just started football this year with us and the sky’s the limit for this kid,” said Carrier. “He has grown so much with the game of football mentally and physically, near the end of the year, he became one of our better players and somebody we could rely on.”

And for all four of these players, who all have at least one year of high school football left, Carrier is more than excited to see just how much they improve individually. When the season starts in the fall, the whole team can improve that much more.

“Then they can come back to our team at the end of August when we start main camp and they’ll be leaders. They’ll be showing the other kids on our team like, hey, this is how we did it here and I’ve learned this and I’ve improved at this.

Carrier is also excited to see how the experience will benefit both the players themselves as well as the Tornados football program.
