NorthEast Red Sox end year with provincial title

Aug 13, 2022 | 5:30 PM

The NorthEast Red Sox are the 2022 Tier 3 AA provincial champions.

This marks their second provincial title in the past five seasons.

Team Member Lane Gerwing told northeastNOW it was a great feeling for the club to win, as they proved to themselves they could still play some pretty great ball.

“It means a ton, it means to all the guys that we can still do it. We won provincials our second year as a team and then haven’t won since, so it just kind of shows that we still are capable of doing that. Our team is still capable this year and years in the future too.”

And for this club, they’re still fairly young and in the prime years of their playing time, as they age from 20 to 28.

According to Gerwing, that means they still got a lot of years left and hopefully, a lot more they can still achieve.

“I think everyone likes to be part of a winning team. When you have success, I think everyone’s just a little bit happier and much more interested in coming back. It’s exciting to know that with this group we can win and hopefully, it gives us more motivation to keep it going.”

While this team has succeeded at the provincial level, they have yet to win it all at the league level.

This team also competes in the Saskatoon Men’s Baseball League (SMBL) and they recently lost out in the playoffs to the four-time defending-champion Rangers.

With that in mind, Gerwing mentioned how difficult it is to win both in the same season, however, that won’t stop this group from making a hell of a run at it.

“One of the hardest things is that they’re two separate things and they don’t coexist super well, so it’s definitely hard to do both in the same year. But, we’re always trying to represent ourselves at the highest level we can in both league and provincials.”

That pride will also always be amplified because of where this team hails from.

Members from Melfort, Nipawin, Carrot River, Hudson Bay, Arborfield and Zenon Park all represent the Northeast.

Gerwing explained that while this may present them as underdogs to others, their fans sure don’t share in that same vision.

“I think even growing up playing ball in the northeast, I don’t think that the cities necessarily always gave us maybe the respect that we thought we deserved. The support that we get, being in the Northeast and not getting to play there. We always have some sort of friends and family support.”
