Trial date set for accused in Cumberland House standoff

Sep 21, 2022 | 11:00 AM

One of the three men charged following a standoff with RCMP in Cumberland House will be tried next spring.

Gage Pratt, 25, will be tried on April 4, 2023, on a charge of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

On the same date in Cumberland House, Pratt will have 20 other charges from four different files undergo a review.

Two other men charged out of the same incident have pending court dates. Anthony Kadachuk, 24, will appear by video in La Ronge Provincial Court Thursday to enter a plea on charges of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, having unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon, having a restricted firearm with ammunition without a license, failing to comply with an undertaking and failing to comply with a release order.

The details of Bernie Kadachuk’s last appearance on Tuesday in La Ronge Provincial Court were not available at publication time. Bernie is also charged with having cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

All of the charges were laid following a standoff on the Cumberland House Cree Nation on June 2 of this year.

RCMP were investigating information that a man wanted for assaulting a police officer was in the community and as a result, had contained a house on Pemmican Portage Avenue when they saw a man with a gun on the property.

During the incident, backup in the form of other RCMP officers and the Critical Incident Response Team arrived and the community was under a civil emergency alert with people asked to stay inside their homes and lock their doors and windows.

The Nisto Awasisak Memorial School was placed on hold-and-secure protocols while people in houses nearby were evacuated.

Two of the men inside the house surrendered right after the emergency alert was issued but a third person took longer before surrendering. One of them had a loaded gun seized by officers.

Shots were exchanged between the remaining occupants of the house and officers outside before a fourth male left the house and surrendered.

Police then learned that a wounded man was still inside the house, so officers entered and provided emergency care.

The 22-year-old man from Prince Albert has not been identified publicly and was later declared dead at hospital.
