New dry milling plant celebrates grand opening

Oct 5, 2022 | 8:48 AM

C-Merak officially celebrated the grand opening of its new dry milling plant, just a few kilometres west of the Town of Tisdale.

Local and provincial representatives were present, as the company unveiled its new protein development facility.

One of the representatives was Minister of Agriculture David Marit, as he told northeastNOW about the doors this opens up in the industry.

“That’s one of the things we’re really driving to do when you look at our growth plan. It just gives an opportunity for producers another place to market the product and another crop to grow. For a company to make this type of investment in rural Saskatchewan, it shows that they have confidence and see the growth potential for growing their business,” he said.

C-Merak’s dry milling process will be used to create protein concentrates, flours and other food ingredients from locally sourced faba beans and oats.

The company believes as the population grows, the world needs alternative sources of protein to keep pace with demand and that plant-based protein offers a healthy and sustainable substitute. Here, in the heart of Canada’s agriculture industry, they are inspired to be part of the solution.

C-Merak was created with the intent of creating quality food ingredients from locally grown crops and CEO and Founder Brett Casavant said they have just scratched the surface.

“I think the opportunities are endless in this food sector. Our focus for the whole future is to keep things as whole and natural as we can. I really hope what comes of this, is that it makes it so, a bunch of people in this area look at it and say ‘Why the hell can’t I do that?’ and they follow suit and it just inspires more innovation and more value added in this area,” he said.

“We have our own signature crops and opportunities here and I think we need to focus on that and embrace that and move forward with that.”
