Mustangs return from break refreshed, ready for Bruins

Nov 11, 2022 | 9:44 AM

The Melfort Mustangs return from a nine-day break on Friday, looking to get back into the win column as they head south for a pair of games against the Estevan Bruins.

Mustangs Captain Ben Tkachuk said it was nice to be able to take a break from hockey for a bit.

“Hit the reset button, spend some time with friends and family,” he said. “It’s good to get away from the game for a little bit. But we’re excited to go down to Estevan and hopefully come away with four points.”

Melfort is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Flin Flon Bombers back on Nov. 2 and also fell 4-1 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves a few days earlier. Prior to that, the Mustangs had their first three-game win streak of the year. However, the offense has seemed to have dried up for Melfort, with only two goals for in their last two games. Tkachuk said that was a main key at practice as they prepared for Estevan.

Head to head this season, the Mustangs have had the Bruins number, winning two of three games so far. Most recently, Melfort won 3-0, and 3-2 on the Bruins last trip to Melfort in late October. Back on Oct. 8, it was Estevan who squeaked by the Mustangs 3-2 in overtime. Tkachuk says while they’ve had success against the Bruins, they have had the comfort of playing at home in all three of those.

“Yeah we’ve had success against them at home, we haven’t gone to their home barn yet,” Tkachuk said. “So we’re excited to play against them, they’ve got speed, a good defence core, and pretty good goaltending to. So we have to make sure we play our game and we should be fine.”

Melfort is currently 7-8-4-0 on the season and are third in the Sherwood Division and sixth in the SJHL overall. Estevan is 13-11-0-0, good for the lead in the Viterra Division, and fourth in the SJHL.

Game time on Friday and Saturday is 7 p.m., and you can hear them on 105 CJVR with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
