Horizon School Division trustee stepping down

A trustee with the Horizon School Division is stepping down.

In a news release, the board announced that Edward Bitternose of the George Gordon First Nation has resigned, in order to focus more on his work with the First Nation.

Bitternose has been the Subdivision 11 trustee since 2020 and is also a Knowledge Keeper with George Gordon First Nation.

“It is with great regret that the Board has accepted Edward’s resignation,” said board chair Jim Hack. “Horizon has benefitted greatly from his knowledge, his dedication to public service, and his guidance on Truth and Reconciliation.”

The resignation means the division will have to hold a by-election for subdivision 11.

Subdivision 11 comprises of George Gordon First Nation, where students attend George Gordon Education Centre, which is run by the Horizon School Division. Some students from the community attend schools in Raymore and Punnichy.

A school board by-election will be held March 1 on George Gordon First Nation, which is subdivision 11 in the Horizon School Division. Submitted/Horizon School Division

In total, the Horizon School Division has 14 subdivisions, and 14 trustees. Including Bitternose, four trustees are indigenous.

The by-election has been set for March 1 next year, and the division says it will be coordinated with Chief Byron Bitternose of George Gordon.
