Somers Sends Stuffies

Somers Stays Scorching in Mustangs domination of Terriers

Dec 3, 2022 | 9:16 AM

The teddy bears weren’t in fans’ hands very long on Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

It took Zac Somers just 1:09 to open the scoring on Teddy Bear Toss night as the Mustangs defeated the Yorkton Terriers 7-0. And it seemed like Somers was the perfect one to score the Teddy Bear goal, the hometown boy, on the hottest of hot streaks right now, and on Parent Billet Weekend.

“It’s something that you see every year growing up,” Somers said. “It’s quite an honour to get that one to go. But ultimately a great play by Riley Ashe, and that was a tap in.”

Dawson Leroux and David Rioux each added goals before 10 minutes had ticked off the first period clock to give Melfort the early 3-0 lead. The good times would also continue into the second as Kevin Minnoch, Ben Tkachuk, and Somers would all score to double the Mustangs lead to 6-0. Rioux would add one more in the third period for a 7-0 victory for the Mustangs, the most goals they’ve scored in a game this season.

“I don’t know if it gets much better than that,” Somers said. “We came out, stomped on them early, and just defeated the life out of them.”

The Mustangs will look to replicate that effort on Saturday night as they welcome the league-leading Battlefords North Stars to the Palace for the second half of Parent-Billet Weekend.

Melfort is now 13-8-5-0 on the season, good for 31 points.
