Mustangs meet Millionaires to open final week before Christmas break

The Melfort Mustangs have just three games left in the 2022 calendar year and it all starts on Wednesday night when they host the Melville Millionaires.

Melfort is one of the hottest teams in the SJHL as of late, winning eight of their last 10 games, and earning points in all 10. It included back-to-back 3-2 wins last weekend in Estevan and Weyburn.

Mustangs defenceman Leith Olafson said the team went through some struggles early in the season, and now they’ve learned how to fight through adversity, which has made this stretch that much sweeter.

“I think the boys are having fun, and it’s a good environment to be in right now.”

As for their opponent, the Millionaires haven’t won in six straight games and sit 11th in the SJHL with 20 points. However, in the Mustangs and Millionaires only other meeting this season, Melville earned a 2-1 overtime decision back in early October.

Olafson said they’ve got to make sure they’re ready to play from puck drop on Wednesday.

“The biggest thing for us is staying up as a group,” he said. “And making sure we get lots of energy right away and making sure we’re dictating the pace.”

Game time on Wednesday night is 7:30 at the Northern Lights Palace.
