Nipawin Salvation Army buying food truck to serve homeless, first responders

The Salvation Army in Nipawin is getting funding to buy a new food truck.

They’re getting over $125,000 through the fourth phase of the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF) which aims to fund projects aimed at strengthening food security in Indigenous, remote, and northern communities.

Ken Green, the Ministry Unit Lead For the Salvation Army, told northeastNOW the truck will be used to deliver food to the community’s homeless.

“We felt we could go out a couple of times a week and serve hot food and hot chocolate to the people that are hungry.”

The funding is also being used to help purchase a new electric oven which will be used to cook the food they plan on handing out. The roughly $125,000 will cover around 75 per cent of the total costs for the truck and oven with the Salvation Army covering the remaining 25 per cent.

Along with helping the homeless, Green said they have plans on using the food truck to serve first responders at emergency events.

“When they had the fires, the (Humboldt Broncos) accident… we could come down to serve the volunteers that are there and give them coffee or food.”

Originally, the thought was the truck would be up and running in about six months to a year. The truck they had planned on buying needed to be fully renovated to accommodate all their needs.

However, they found another truck that doesn’t need as much work done.

“It’s a little bit more than what we thought compared to the quote we gave to the government, but the truck is available now,” said Green.

The plan is for the Salvation Army to cover the added expense. The hope is to have it operational by the end of January to the beginning of February.
