Defenceman of the month?

Mustangs’ Minnoch wins D-man of the week for second time this month

The Melfort Mustangs have registered at least a point in 12 of their last 13 contests, which has been inspired by the recent play of one of their top blue liners.

Twenty-year-old Kevin Minnoch has now won two of the last three SJHL SuperU Defenceman of the Week awards.

Minnoch has at least a point in five of his team’s seven games in the month of December, which includes four multi-point nights.

This past week, he posted at least a point in all three of his squad’s games, which included a three and a four-point night at home.

Those two nights at the Palace were massive wins for the Stangs’, as they dominated the Melville Millionaires 9-1 on Wednesday (Dec. 14) and the Nipawin Hawks 8-3 on Saturday (Dec. 20).

In total, the Sherwood Park, Alberta product put up three goals and five assists, good for eight points in just three contests.

The veteran D-man now has seven goals and 16 assists on the season, good for 23 points, which are all career highs. Those numbers currently have him slotted in eighth place in league-wide blue line scoring (one behind his partner, Hayden Tuba).

With such good play in the Christmas month, and all SJHL games done until the new year, it begs the question: Will he win the defenceman of the month award?

The Mustangs will return to action, Jan. 6 in Melfort, when they host the Nipawin Hawks for a home-and-home rivalry weekend.

The blue and green currently hold a record of 17-9-5-1 (40 points), good for third in their division and sixth in the league (fifth best percentage-wise).
