Mustangs looking forward to exciting weekend against Broncos

Jan 13, 2023 | 11:45 AM

The SJHL standings remain tight and some shuffling could be seen after this coming weekend’s slate of games.

Arguably the most intriguing of which will see the Melfort Mustangs take on the Humboldt Broncos in a home-and-home set.

With second and sixth place in the SJHL separated by just five points, and the Mustangs and Broncos separated by just three points, both teams understand what is at stake. Mustang defender Leith Olafson says their side is excited about what’s in front of them.

“Humboldt and us have a good rivalry going these last few years,” Olafson said. “So, this will be a big weekend.”

It will be meetings four and five between the two clubs, with Humboldt currently leading the season series two games to one, and seeing two games go to overtime.

Melfort is the sixth seed in the SJHL standings heading into the weekend, while Humboldt is tied for third, but things could change quickly with a couple of wins for one side, and some help from the rest of the league.

The Mustangs will also welcome back forward Aidyn Hutchinson who’s been out since November 26, and fans will also get their first look at the newly acquired Wyatt Cook. With only Logan Belton still out with an injury, the Mustangs seem as healthy as they’ve been all season, and Olafson says they’re confident in what’s in the room.

“Having a full lineup back, I think we’re going to be pretty dangerous,” he said.”

Game one of the home and home goes Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, then the series will shift to Humboldt for the second half on Saturday night.
