Mustangs win Friday night horse race at Palace

Jan 14, 2023 | 9:27 AM

The Melfort Mustangs and Humboldt Broncos did not disappoint on Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

It was a back-and-forth affair that ultimately saw Melfort walk away with an 8-4 victory. Mustangs forward Boston Maxwell scored once and added two assists on the evening and said the team rose to the challenge.

“Everyone knew this was a big one on our calendar,” he said. “So it was one of those nights where you’ve got to show up and show out.”

Melfort took the lead early in the second period, scoring twice in 27 seconds. Humboldt would get close, making the game 2-2 and 3-3 at different points in the second period, although Melfort would ultimately lead 5-3 through 40 minutes. Aidyn Hutchinson, Cam Emigh, Wyatt Day, and Dawson Leroux all scored for Melfort in the second period for the Mustangs along with Maxwell in the second.

Leroux’s second goal of the night kicked off the third for Melfort just 50 seconds into the period and Leyton Holoien would add one just a few minutes later to give Melfort the 7-3 lead. Each team would add another later in the period, including Hutchinson’s second for Melfort, to make the 8-3 final.

Maxwell’s career-high three-point night, along with three points from Hutchinson in his first game back from injury instilled some chemistry with the pair and fellow linemate Tye Evans. Maxwell said it was nice to see Hutchinson back in the lineup after a nearly two-month injury.

“It was sweet to get to be on his line tonight,” Maxwell said. “We’ve been building some chemistry through the last week of practice and such, so it was nice to have those guys out there.”

The Mustangs did have to kill off a trio of penalties late in the contest, which included a five-on-three which the Broncos scored on, and Maxwell said they need to tighten things up a bit defensively.

“We know that’s what we have to do, it’s our identity as a team,” he said. “It’s always defence first for us, so that’ll be a key for us going into tomorrow night.”

The two teams are now only separated by just one point in the SJHL standings and will meet again on Saturday night in Humboldt. Game time is 7:30 at the Elgar Petersen Arena and you can catch all the action on 105 CJVR.
