Mustangs can’t solve Hounds netminder, get tough break in loss

Jan 18, 2023 | 9:37 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have lost back-to-back games for the first time since Oct. 29 and Nov. 2— after a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Notre Dame Hounds.

After the Mustangs fell 6-2 to the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday, this was a completely different Mustangs squad. They fired 37 shots toward Tucker Inabinet but only put two passed the Hounds netminder.

Mustangs assistant coach Dan Meyers said while they came out on the losing end, they believe they were the better team.

“Thought we were the better team,” Meyers said. “Their goalie played good, the posts were good for them, just one of those nights we couldn’t get by the goalie.”

In the first period, it felt like the Mustangs were well on their way to two points as Dawson Leroux scored his 17th of the year just 1:52 into the hockey game. Then it was Boston Maxwell on the powerplay to make it 2-0. Although from that point, the Mustangs’ offence went cold.

Jacob Ligi made it 2-1 late in the first, and then there wasn’t a goal until Rocsyn Bird tied things up just two-and-a-half minutes into the third. It stayed 2-2 until the Mustangs were trying to break out of the zone and the puck took a weird bounce off the end boards and popped out in front where Dane Probe made no mistake to give the Hounds their first lead of the night.

Melfort pressed late, but couldn’t solve Inabinet as they fall to 19-12-5-1.

Meyers said he was pleased with how they were able to create offensively tonight.

“I thought we skated good,” Meyers said. “We’re a good skating team with big ice out here. We were throwing pucks and going to the net, but just didn’t get the breaks.”

The Mustangs will get their chance for revenge on the Hounds on Friday night when Notre Dame comes to Melfort.
