Senior curling provincials underway in Tisdale

Feb 16, 2023 | 3:10 PM

The best of the best of Saskatchewan’s most experienced curlers will be battling it out in Tisdale all weekend.

The town is the host for the 2023 CURLSASK Men’s and Women’s Senior Curling Provincials.

Marc Anderson, the chief icemaker and manager for the curling club, told northeastNOW it’s a massive event for the community.

“We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to bring them here,” he said. “I think not just for our club, but getting all these guys, brings in a lot of business all over the community, so we have a lot of good sponsors, and I know the people are excited to come and watch curling for sure.”

Draws will run at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday, while the draws for the finals on Sunday will only run at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Anderson mentioned it’s pretty special to be able to experience this high a level of curling, for four straight days.

“There are teams that have all won provincials here, there are teams that have won the masters here, so there’s lots of really good curling, for sure, and lots of other really good curlers.”

A total of 12 men’s teams will be participating in the triple-knockout tournament, while a total of six women’s teams will be doing the same.

And while the event has just begun, Anderson explained the atmosphere has been quite good so far.

“Guys are really happy with the ice so far… there are only three games on right now, but everyone seems to be really happy with this facility,” he said. “That doesn’t happen without our volunteers though, they come in and help with the ice, we always do a fresh flood before these events, and it takes countless people to run the time clocks and the 50/50, so a lot of people pitching in to help, for sure.”

Ticket prices for fans wanting to tune into the action are $10 for the day or $20 for the entire weekend. 50/50 is also available with 1 ticket for $10, 10 for $20, or 50 for $50.

Anderson added events like these are crucial in keeping the club open, for the foreseeable future.

“It’s getting harder and harder to keep the curling club going and events like this definitely bring in a fair enough chunk of money for us with new sponsors and everything to keep us going for more years… we’re just excited to have it going smooth so far, and hope that the weekend brings in lots of good curling and excitement to town.”

Bleachers are set up in the lounge, so there is lots of seating available.
