Mustangs looking to continue winning ways in weekend set with Millionaires

Feb 17, 2023 | 8:00 AM

The Melfort Mustangs could officially clinch their spot in the SJHL playoffs on Friday night as they visit the Melville Millionaires.

In the simplest of terms, if the Mustangs win, they clinch. Also, if the Notre Dame Hounds lose, Melfort is in as well. Melfort has won three games in a row to now put themselves in this position, and forward Ryan Duguay said they’ve tried to approach every game with the same mentality.

“Not playing down to our opponents, playing the best we can every night,” he said. “And treating everyone the same because anyone can win in this league.”

Melfort has now pulled to within four points of second place, and are just two points back of La Ronge. The Mustangs are currently fifth in the league with a 26-14-5-2 record.

One big reason for the Mustangs’ recent success might be the play of the new-look forward lines, which includes a trio of Duguay, with Ben Tkachuk and Dawson Leroux, the same line that shined for a combined nine points in two games at the SJHL/MJHL Showcase in Winnipeg. They’ve combined for eight points in three games since being reunited.

“Trying to build off that still, working out some chemistry,” Duguay said. “It’s going good, and I’m excited to keep going with them.”

Friday will mark meeting number three of the season between Melfort and Melville, with each team winning once. Melville’s win came in a 2-1 overtime decision in Melville back in October, while Melfort’s win was a dominating 9-1 win at home in December.

Melville is currently on the outside looking in of the playoff picture, sitting in 11th with a 12-27-5-1 record.

Friday night’s game in Melville can be heard on 105 CJVR, while Saturday night will take place in Melfort with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
