Hawks hit highway to Flin Flon for final meeting with Bombers

Mar 3, 2023 | 10:44 AM

The Nipawin Hawks’ busy schedule continues Friday with their final trip of the regular season to Flin Flon to take on the Bombers at the iconic Whitney Forum.

Coming off wins over Kindersley at home on Tuesday and a road win in Melville on Wednesday, Nipawin is looking for their third straight win and a berth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) playoffs.

The Hawks and Bombers could still meet in the playoffs as the Hawks sit in seventh, while the Bombers are currently in second place. Hawks forward Alex Johnson said getting a win in a building such as in Flin Flon or North Battleford Tuesday would g a long way for the teams’ confidence.

“Those are a couple tough buildings to play in couple up here, so I think we need to prove to the league we’re in for the long run,” the 20-year-old Calgary product said.

Flin Flon has beaten Nipawin the last four times the teams met, the Bombers will win the season series. The Hawks won opener of the matchups between the northern rivals way back on Sept. 17 at the Centennial Arena.

Nipawin sits six points up on Weyburn in seventh in the SJHL standings, the Hawks are within striking distance of Estevan for sixth, the Bruins are two points up on Nipawin but have played an extra game. Estevan is off Friday.

Notre Dame is grasping for their playoff lives, they are 11 points behind Nipawin and five under Weyburn.

Face-off in Flin Flon is 7:30 p.m., the pregame show of Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey will start at 7:15 p.m. on 750 Beach Radio.
