A large number of high schools throughout the province were engaged in regional basketball tournaments this past weekend, hoping to book their ticket to provincials.

The northeast had a total of eight different communities participating, as both boys’ and girls’ teams, ranging from the 1A to 5A levels, battled it out.

Four of them were able to advance to this weekend’s HOOPLA provincials, while the other four, unfortunately, fell just short.

First, it was Melfort’s 4A boys’ team, who entered the weekend as the number two ranked team, earning victories at home, over fifteenth-ranked Senator Myles Venne (93-43), and seventh-ranked Meadow Lake (75-34).

The second teams to advance were the 2A boys from both Porcupine Plain and St. Brieux.

Porcupine Plain, ranked number two, earned home wins against fifteenth-ranked Meath Park (109-65) and seventh-ranked Langham (112-59).

Meanwhile, third-ranked St. Brieux recorded home victories against fourteenth-ranked Asquith (84-32) and sixth-ranked Saskatoon Christian (71-65).

Lake Lenore then followed that up, as both their 1A girls and boys advanced.

In the boys’ category, they were ranked second and beat twelfth-ranked Kerrobert, 69-46 at home.

As for the girls, they were the top-ranked team, leaving the weekend with 70-21 and 63-46 home wins, against eighth-ranked Allan and third-ranked Coronach.

The 1A boys’ tournament also had Middle Lake participate, who had a 72-25 win against Filmore, before losing 101-52 against Stoughton.

Meanwhile, the 2A girls’ tournament featured St. Briuex, as they had a 78-65 win over Asquith, before being taken down by LCBI (Outlook) 54-52.

As for the 4A boys’ division, it had both Tisdale and Humboldt as competitors, with Tisdale losing 104-70 against MJ Vanier and 70-59 against Lumsden.

Humboldt fared slightly better, as although they lost to Yorkton Sacred Heart 88-85, they came back with an 81-78 win against NB John Paul II.

And finally, the 4A girls’ regionals featured Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, and Humboldt.

Melfort had a 79-11 win against Nipawin before losing against MJ Central 60-47, Nipawin lost to Melfort 79-11 and Yorkton Sacred Heart 65-32, Tisdale had losses against NB John Paul II (60-14) and Saskatoon Marion Graham (41-36), and Humboldt beat Martensville 44-37, before being defeated by Meadow Lake 82-35.
