Mustangs and Ice Wolves continue hard fought series with game five in Melfort

Mar 24, 2023 | 11:46 AM

Game five of the SJHL’s first round series between the Melfort Mustangs and La Ronge Ice Wolves goes on Friday night in Melfort.

The series is currently tied at two games apiece. From a fan perspective, the series has left nothing on the table in terms of entertainment value, and neither team has gained much of an inch in the series.

Each team has scored ten times, and each team has one win in overtime through four games. The series has also featured a last minute venue change when the teams were in La Ronge.

Melfort won the most recent contest by a 3-1 score, tying the series back up. Goalie Joel Favreau said that they’ve felt like they could be leading this series, but in the same breath, things could be the other way around.

“We could definitely be in much worse spots,” Favreau said. “I think we’re in a pretty good place getting them back at home, it’s a bit of momentum going into it.”

Favreau has gone toe to toe with Ice Wolves netminder Dawson Smith in the series and says it’s been a fun battle. Favreau sports a .912 save-percentage through four games and Smith has earned a .938.

“It’s a game within the game there, he’s a great goaltender,” Favreau said. “It’s always fun having matchups like that, and I think I put myself back in the race last night.”

Favreau stopped 29 of 30 in Melfort’s game four win.

Puck drop at the Palace on Friday is 7:30 p.m.
